In 2005, the former surface mining facilities in Frechen became Marienfeld, the venue for vigil and final mass of World Youth Day XX held jointly by Pope Benedict XVI and a million Christians from 188 nations around the world.
Since then Marienfeld has developed into an area for pilgrimage, leisure activities and local recreation, highlighted by the imposing Papal Hill with its huge landmark cross.

Currently, additional projects to implement attractive landscaping are underway, such as the structured land re-cultivation, tree planting and installation of meadows, marshes and lakes. In addition, Marienfeld has a well-developed network of hiking paths.

Starting at Marienfeld, the 28 km long Adolph-Kolping Pilgrimage Trail – established for World Youth Day XX – leads past seven basalt steles along the way toward Cologne Cathedral.
