The newly designed, restructured Rheinauhafen area is a young, attractive district of Cologne. The 210,000 m² space, located directly on the Rhine and not far from the city centre, has become a major Cologne attraction. In the port district, modern apartments and offices nestle alongside numerous cafés, restaurants and galleries. Architecture and culture fans will also find the Rheinauhafen of interest. The centre of the new Cologne promenade are three “Kranhäuser”, or “crane houses”, which are around 60 meters tall. The buildings, which look like cranes, dominate the skyline on the left bank of the Rhine.

The newly opened, trapezoid four-star Superior hotel, art’otel cologne, has been built directly on the bank of the Rhine. In the eye-catching building with its colourful windows, dramatic, picturesque collages by the Korean artist SEO, a former master pupil of Georg Baselitz, can be seen as a permanent exhibition.

In 1998, the “Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln AG” company, together with the City of Cologne, began to redesign the old port facility and develop derelict areas. The design for the redevelopment was provided by the well-known Hamburg architects’ bureau, Bothe, Richter, Teherani.

Many old buildings, such as the former grain silo of the quarter, known as the “Siebengebirge” (“seven hills”) among the locals due to its characteristic seven peaked gables, was extensively restored for its new use. The coexistence between listed buildings and modern architecture is characteristic for the Rheinauhafen area.
