Cologne Cathedral is a cathedral without parallel, the symbol and centre of this metropolitan city on the Rhine. The foundation stone of the Gothic cathedral was laid on 15 August 1248 on the Feast of the Assumption. The old cathedral was evidently not representative enough for housing the bones of the Holy Three Kings, which Archbishop Rainald von Dassel had brought from Milan to the cathedral city in 1164. These relics made the cathedral one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe. The imposing pair of towers - the north tower (157.38 m) is 7 cm higher than the south tower - have dominated the city’s skyline since they were completed in 1880.

The cathedral still remains the second-highest building in Cologne, after the radio tower. The floor area of the cathedral, measuring nearly 8,000 square meters, offers space for more than 20,000 people. With its impressive Gothic architecture, the shrine of the Holy Three Kings, the outstanding stained glass windows and many other important works of art, Cologne Cathedral was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996.
